Here’s to all of you hoping for a great year full of love, friendship, happiness, success, productivity and creativity. All of my positive energy will go into these wishes this year and I hope the same for you as well. I feel like I’ve been on a journey for my soul (as corny as it sounds) in the last few years and I have realized how important these things are to me personally and how wonderful life can be.

Cheers! I will see you in the New Year!

Laura

Oh, and I can’t not post this… Happy Birthday to my 6 year-old son, Owen… my New Year’s Day baby. I love you with all my heart, little monkey.

I am participating in Wishcasting Wednesday with Jamie Ridler again from Jamie Ridler Studios! Jamie asks, What step do you wish to take?

The step that I wish to take is to follow through with the ideas that are always popping into my head, churning in my head and nudging me whenever I consciously take a break from them! I need to follow through with them. They are great ideas that will just take a bit of work, but they WILL be worth it!!!

Along these lines, I have to admit I watched Stephanie Meyer, author of the Twilight series on Oprah last week (yes, yes, I know all about them and have read them and felt like a teenager again… I have a teenage daughter, so that’s my excuse!). Love them or hate them, you’ve got to admire this woman for taking that step. She stated the first book came to her in a dream. She woke up wanting to know how ithe story would end so she wrote it down and found herself writing and writing and writing, until she was finished. It was at that point that she realized it could be a book (with a little nudging from her sister).

Wow. I realized I have had these type of dreams… I have them all the time… whether in my sleep or during the day with lightbulbs going off in my head and I have not taken that step to follow through on them. I once woke up with an amazing idea for a whole series of children’s books, got excited for about a week, then went on to something else… typical me!

So, back to the step I wish to take…. Ok, I’m on it. Now. And it’s a good one.

Thanks Wishcasting Wednesday!

As a visual artist, I think it is very important to expose my children to art and has been a big part of our lives for many many years. I’ve done countless arts and crafts with them and promoted the use of my “real” art tools and mediums. I’ve allowed them to make messes and explore their creativity without too many limits. I think it worked really well with my 14 yr-old daughter, Haley, even if she might not remember the hours I spent with her when she was younger. I think she could actually teach me quite a bit now… see here for her amazing work…

Now for my 5 yr-old, Owen… same thing with him. He uses my “art stuff” and has created many a masterpiece himself… see here for his work! But, today I found out that hey, I have also given a creative outlet for my children to express their feelings… even if it does make me look like a mean mean mommy! haha!

Here’s the drawing Owen presented me with after I had said no, he couldn’t go downstairs by himself. He’s the one on the left crying buckets of tears, I’m on the right saying NO! and there are arrows pointing down to the basement with nobody in it:

I have to say he was quite proud of his drawing and although I wanted to laugh out loud when I saw it, I realized that this was a good opportunity to discuss his feelings that he felt strongly enough about to put onto paper!

This one’s a keeper. I think I’m going to save it and show it to him when he grows up. I also think I’m onto something with our little form of Expressive Arts Therapy and will continue to encourage my children to express themselves through their art!

I’m working on ATC cards drawing small bits of designs that you might see in home decor textiles and wearable fabrics. Today I did another black and white design - a simple leaf pattern. I’m definitely leaning towards the more dramatic bold black and white designs for these little ATC cards, so I think I’ll continue for the month with more of these.

I’m particpating in Art Every Day Month at http://creativeeveryday.com and enjoying my theme of pattern and design.

I’m working on ATC cards drawing small bits of designs that you might see in home decor textiles and wearable fabrics. Today though, I decided to work on a design that would not need any kind of cloth, but instead, the human body. I’ve always loved Mendhi designs and love to see the different patterns on women’s hands, feet and more recently, pregnant bellies. The designs can range from really simple to quite detailed and I just love to see how intricate they can be. I’ve only had a mendhi tattoo on my ankle once (done at a stall in the market) that only took 5 minutes to do. Someday I’d love to sit for however long it takes to have a beautiful, traditional mendhi design done.

Here’s Number #4:

I’m particpating in Art Every Day Month at http://creativeeveryday.com and having fun with it!

Today’s ATC was just a quick reproduction of a poppy used in a design for wallpaper. Not enough time today to even work on my regular art today… all work and not much art makes Laura a dull girl.

Here’s Number #3:

Thanks again to the creator, Leah Piken Kolidas (@leah_art on Twitter for all you Tweeps) for creating and hosting this creative outlet!

It’s Wishcasting Wednesday with Jamie Ridler from Jamie Ridler Studios! Jamie asks, What do you wish to experience?

My wish today is to experience a financial increase as well as new creative opportunities! Sounds greedy maybe, but hey, who couldn’t use extra money? ~Insert smiley face here ~ It will be great when budgeting will not hold me back creatively!

What do you wish to experience today?
